One in thirty of the UK's population has a visual impairment. That's nearly
two million people.
Each month as many as 50 people in Essex are told that their sight is failing.
Many will eventually become totally blind.
Currently there are approximately 15,000 people in Essex who are registered blind or partially-sighted.
The true figure may be nearer 50,000 as many people chose not to be registered.
Only 4% of visually impaired people can see nothing at all. The remainder have
some vision, even if this is only light perception.
About four out of five visually impaired people are over 65 years of age.
Only 3% of blind and partially sighted people read Braille.
